What kind of smoker are you?
Before we even talk about which e-cigarette is right for you, we need to determine your smoking profile. Obviously, an occasional smoker who gets through fewer than 10 cigarettes a day won’t have the same needs as a heavy smoker who burns through a whole pack each day.
The nicotine dependency won’t be the same for these two types of smoker, therefore their vaping equipment must be tailored to their specific needs if they want to successfully quit smoking.
We can distinguish 3 different smoker profiles:
- The occasional smoker who smokes fewer than 10 cigarettes a day.
- The average or regular smoker who smokes more than 10 cigarettes a day.
- The heavy smoker who smokes a packet of cigarettes or more each day.
Whichever smoking profile corresponds to your situation, know that there’s vaping equipment for it.
What types of electronic cigarette are there?
As we said before, there are various vape kits for various smoker profiles. Choosing an electronic cigarette becomes much easier when you know your needs.
In the beginning, there were a lot of ‘Cigalikes’, which were inspired by the aesthetic of classic tobacco cigarettes and tried to copy them in order to appeal to smokers. However, they are increasingly abandoned due to their unreliability, tiny tanks, non-existent flavours and low vapour production. Moreover, they used e-liquid capsules, which didn’t offer many flavours.
Podmods:
Thankfully, the vaping market has grown and offers many types of e-cigarettes. Podmods have appeared on the vaping scene and revolutionised the way we vape overnight. They’ve replaced the much-scorned cigalikes. Pods, as they are also known, are compact but powerful electronic cigarettes that are great for helping smokers transition from tobacco to vaping. Indeed, they’re very effective with all types of e-liquid, especially e-liquids with nicotine salts or CBD in them.
Most of the time, they offer a rather tight draw (MTL), close to the one you get with a traditional cigarette. Thus, beginners who didn’t smoke that much will enjoy these devices, but the heavier smokers among you might find them lacking. These people should opt for a more powerful kit instead, with more battery autonomy and more settings.
Box mods:
Box mods, or simply ‘mods’, are bigger than the other types of electronic cigarette. Their rectangular shape allows them to carry larger batteries and thus have a greater autonomy than podmods or All-In-One kits. Moreover, they are managed by an electronic chipset, which can be configured to suit your needs, using various settings.
Therefore, box mods are perfect for heavy smokers who get through more than a pack each day. They can take full advantage of the mods’ settings, as well as their greater autonomy and power, to better satisfy their nicotine craving. Please note that they aren’t recommended for beginner smokers who smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes a day, as the mods’ many settings make them more complex.
Tube mods:
As the name suggests, this type of e-cigarette has an elongated tube shape. These electronic cigarettes are very widespread and compact. They’re discreet and easily fit into a bag, all while offering a similar grip to tobacco cigarettes.
This type of vape kit offers a satisfactory performance for most people. They have a big enough battery to last a full day’s use.
On top of the kit’s battery, you’ll find a clearomiser fitted with a coil and a tank. The clearomiser is there to heat up the liquid and vapourise it, and you then inhale said vapour by placing your lips around the mouthpiece, also called ‘drip tip’. Depending on the model, this clearomiser can either be removed or is fixed in place. The latter is true for the electronic cigarettes known as AIO or ‘all-in-one’ kits.
These cigarettes are also great for beginners, as they require very little maintenance and allow you to keep the smoking gestures you’re used to. All you need to do is replace the coil when it wears out and charge the battery regularly. On most tube mods there are almost no settings, only a single button that fires up the device.
How to choose your electronic cigarette
As we said before, you need to take several parameters into account if you want to choose an appropriate electronic cigarette for your needs. Your smoking profile will help us do so.
The occasional smoker:
If you’re an occasional smoker, we recommend you pick a small electronic cigarette that’s more suited to your moderate needs, whilst allowing you to keep your gestures and habits.
These gestures are a key factor in any successful smoking withdrawal. It’s why electronic cigarettes are so popular among former smokers, with a record success rate that’s far greater than any other nicotine substitute.
Podmod electronic cigarettes are a good option for occasional smokers. They’re compact and discreet and will accompany you wherever you go. The average smoker:
If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, but less than a pack, there are ecigarettes for you. In your situation, there’s a relatively important nicotine addiction, and these batteries will keep you vaping all day long with ease.
The heavy smoker:
Finally, the heavy smokers who burn through more than a pack a day need specific equipment for their demanding needs. Pods will be of no use here, except for a few rare exceptions. You’ll need box mod kits like the Nautilus GT or the Ikuu i80 Zenith, namely powerful electronic cigarettes with big batteries that can last for several days. These kits have various settings that allow you to adjust your vape depending on your needs and increase their power if you need a nicotine boost.
Do electronic cigarettes cost less than tobacco?
Yes, electronic cigarettes cost far less than tobacco, but how exactly do they save you money?
The first reason why e-cigs are cheaper than tobacco is because the cost of tobacco keeps rising, at least in France. This is in accordance with the French public health policy that aims to reduce the number of smokers in France. Today, a packet of cigarettes costs about €10 on average.
Buying an e-cigarette is an excellent choice for both your health and your wallet. Indeed, an e-cigarette will cost you much less than tobacco in the medium and long run. The initial investment needed to equip yourself will quickly pay for itself.
This initial investment, which includes an electronic cigarette, some e-liquid and a box of coils, costs an average of 50 to 70 euros, whereas a smoker's monthly budget amounts to about 250 euros. No need to be a maths genius to figure out how much money you’ll save! The only consumables an e-cigarette uses are the e-liquid and coils, which must be changed regularly. And if you start DIYing, i.e, making your own e-liquids, you’ll save even more money!
