What are nicotine salts?
The nicotine used in traditional e-liquids is a purified form of the nicotine molecule, called freebase nicotine. It’s extracted using several chemical processes, resulting in this purified nicotine with a PH value of about 8.
Nicotine salt, for its part, is the form that most closely resembles the natural nicotine found in the tobacco plant. By adding an acid to freebase nicotine you get nicotine salts, which are a bit more acidic, with a PH of 5 to 6.
Nicotine salts have a different acidity, and therefore a different effect. The nicotine salts’ acidity is closer to that of blonde tobacco cigarettes. They are absorbed by the body at a much faster rate, which avoids vapers having to increase their e-cigarette’s power or their nicotine level to achieve better results!
What differentiates traditional nicotine from nicotine salts?
As we said earlier, traditional nicotine and nicotine salts are produced in different ways and have equally different effects when inhaled.
The main difference is that your body absorbs nicotine salts much faster than the nicotine found in traditional e-liquids. Therefore, nicotine salts will satisfy you much quicker.
However, the hit (the muscular contraction you feel in your throat when the vapour passes through) you get with a nicotine salt e-liquid is much smoother, even with a 20 mg/ml dosage. Some vapers prefer a good hit over a rapid satisfaction, so nicotine salts might not be the best option for them.
What sets the two nicotine types apart is the dosage they’re available in. Where traditional e-liquids are sold with 0, 3, 6, 12, 16 and even 18 mg/ml dosages, nicotine salt e-liquids are only available in two dosages in France, 10 and 20 mg/ml.

What sort of equipment do nicotine salts require?
As you now know, nicotine salt e-liquids are more rapidly absorbed by the body. Therefore, it’s very important that your equipment is suited to this type of liquid if you want to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Indeed, this type of eliquid isn’t suitable for very powerful electronic cigarettes, such as sub-ohm mods. If you use a device that produces large amounts of vapour, it’ll vapourise too much liquid and thus too much nicotine. This will definitely cause a nicotine overdose, which can in turn cause headaches or dizziness.
