How to fill your tank

You've just acquired the best clearomiser for your electronic cigarette, but you're wondering how to fill it.

It's a routine procedure for any vaper, but it can differ depending on the device. It can also prove complicated if it's your first time.

The tank is a key part of your electronic cigarette's vapour production. Indeed, it contains the coil and the e-liquid, and is often made from Pyrex glass. It's thanks to capillary action that the e-liquid is brought into contact with the resistive wire, which is heated by the battery that sends a specific voltage, vapourising said e-liquid. The vapour then rises through the chimney up to the drip tip, so that you can inhale it.

Of course, the number of refills you'll have to do will vary, depending on the device and how much you use it. An occasional vaper with an indirect inhale will probably need to fill it just once a day, whilst a sub-ohm vaper will have to refill his tank several times.

Whatever your electronic cigarette consumption is, you'll find here all the tips and information for cleanly and efficiently refilling your device!

Filling your clearomiser, a crucial process

Just like any vaper, you'll have to refill your electronic cigarette's clearomiser from time to time.

The first tip we can give you is to not wait until the tank is empty before refilling it. Indeed, you'd risk damaging the coil's fibre. If the latter isn't properly soaked, it'll dry out and get burnt by the hot resistive wire.

Refilling your tank before it's empty is a great habit that'll save you from changing your whole coil prematurely.

It's also important to never overfill your clearomiser. This often results in uncontrollable and annoying leakages.

Filling your clearomiser from below

Many clearomisers today have a bottom-fill system. Such is the case of the famous Nautilus kit from Aspire, or Eleaf's GS Air, tanks that are renowned for their many qualities, particularly among beginner vapers.

This type of clearomiser is simple to refill, but requires a bit of care nonetheless, in order to prevent any leaks.

If you own one of these clearomisers, simply unscrew its base and slowly pour your e-liquid inside the tank. Be careful to not pour any juice inside the central chimney, otherwise you might risk swallowing a few drops of it when inhaling.

Top-fill clearomisers

Clearomisers with a top-fill system are more and more common today, making up the majority of the market. It must be said that they're much more practical, safer, and cleaner, especially if you have to refill it several times a day.

Devices such as the Melea 4 kit from Eleaf, Innokin's Zenith, and Smok's TFV16 all have a top-filling system.

Simpler than the bottom-fill system, top-filling still requires you to close the air intakes, the 'airflow', before refilling. Otherwise, you'll end up with several leaks, caused by the air depressurising inside the atomising chamber.

To do so, simply rotate the airflow ring, generally placed on the clearomiser's base, until the air intakes are completely closed.

Then, open up the refill well, located on the clearomiser's 'top cap', before inserting the tip of your e-liquid bottle into it to fill up your tank. It's as simple as that!

Clearomisers with a side-fill system

In a few rare cases, clearomisers have a side-fill system. This method is more and more abandoned in favour of top-filling, for obvious practical reasons.

With this type of refill, you generally have to completely remove the top cap from the clearomiser to access the refill well. The rest of the process remains the same, you must insert the tip of your e-liquid bottle into the well to refill the tank.

Again, make sure you fully close the air intakes to prevent any unwanted leaks.

Filling your podmod

Another case that's becoming increasingly common is the podmod electronic cigarette, like the Atopack Penguin V2, Geek Vape's Aegis Boost, or Voopoo's Vinci. If you own a podmod, you may wonder how its tank is filled.

There again, the process is incredibly simple. Podmods are a certain type of electronic cigarette that's split into two parts. The battery on one side, and the pod on the other, comprised of a mod and a cartridge.

In most cases, the podmod's cartridges have a rubber or silicone cap that can be removed. Once opened, you can insert the tip of your e-liquid bottle inside it and fill up the device.

However, most cartridges are quite small, and you'll need to use a bottle with a thin dropper.

Properly filling your clearomiser

To summarise, filling your electronic cigarette can be broken down into three simple steps, regardless of which clearomiser you use.

How to fill your clearomiser:

  • Step 1: unscrew the clearomiser's top cap or its base, depending on the model
  • Step 2: Fill the tank with e-liquid, by letting it run down the inside of the tank.
  • Step 3: Screw the top cap or base back onto the clearomiser, then place it back on your battery.

Filling up your tank regularly is a good habit to pick up, as it maintains your clearomiser and keeps it working for longer.

Indeed, a tank that's constantly full ensures that your coil is always soaked with e-liquid. The fibre will deteriorate more slowly, and you'll enjoy your coil for longer, saving you some money in the process!

Finally, know that all this advice is also valid for rebuildable atomizers. As is the case for a clearomiser, they have a coil with an organic cotton wick, saturated with e-liquid at all times.

New coils and their first fill

If you're reading these lines, it may be because you've just acquired your very first electronic cigarette and want to quit smoking.

You've unpacked your kit, and of course you have to set up the first coil and fill up the tank for the first time.

Here are a few tips for doing so, and it works for any time you change a coil:

  • Set up your coil
  • Pour a few drops of e-liquid onto the cotton
  • ut your clearomiser back together
  • Fill the tank from above, below, or from the side, depending on your clearomiser
  • Wait for a few minutes, without turning the electronic cigarette on, so that the coil can absorb enough e-liquid.
  • Prime your coil, using a low power
  • Gradually increase the power until you get a pleasant feel.

Regardless of the tank's size, capacity or material, refilling it is done in more or less the same way. By following our advice, you're sure of getting a beautiful vapour and impeccable flavours throughout your coil's lifespan. This routine operation will no longer hold any secrets for you!
